Interesting Things We Learned

After the War of Independence in 1948, Tel Aviv began to grow.  Only Hebrew was spoken here. That brought some interesting challenges as it had not been used in about 2000 years. Many Jews did not know the language as they either picked up the language of the country they migrated from or spoke Yiddish. So many new "things" did not have Hebrew names. How do you teach physics or information technology only using Hebrew?  At Tel Aviv University, all courses are only taught in Hebrew.  This also limits your potential teachers as many knew no Hebrew.

Reduce, reuse, recycle. This philosophy was well followed by the Roman Empire, the Byzantine empire, Muslims and Israel as each group conquered, destroyed and rebuilt Caesarea using the stones and materials from previous builds. You can see the layers, change of materials and techniques over the years. Today, many columns of marble simply lay aside until a need is found .
